It features ~100 sketches of projects that never reached the hardware stage, as well as the better known designs. Some of these heavily influenced later aircraft, in particular the early Russian jets. I think it's one of the old lifting body experimentals, but I can't come up with anything more. Would some kind soul mind filling in the gaps for me? I'm not a kind soul, but that won't stop me. The crash you see in the intro to this show is Bruce Peterson in the M2-F2. He got distracted by a fire truck and a helicopter that were too close to where he wanted to land and he excited the lateral instability that the M2-F2 had. We'd seen this mode before, but more up and away and it hadn't seemed too bad. Probably that was because the pilot's gain was somewhat lower up and away. It may also have been airspeed-dependent (I don't remember) and worse slower, near the ground. The M2-F2 was rebuilt as the M2-F3 and Bruce quit being a test pilot and became our Safety Officer. He did keep flying for the Marine Reserve. He damaged his elbow and face, including his eyelid and eye. However, the vehicle you see coming off the hooks is the HL-10. Ah, Hollywood. You can read about this in Hallion's book. I briefly described the instability and the studies that discovered it in my paper on in-flight simulation here at Dryden and gave the original sources in the reference list. But I want to build an 1/48 model of the night fighting version of the P-38. Although I have heaps of information regarding the layout of the pilot's station, I haven't been able to find any info on the cockpit layout of the backseater station in the night fighter (I think it was P-38N). I would deeply appreciate any suggestion on where to look for the said info.
