I don't know if I'll make it to this as there is a GPS forum at the same time. On Saturday July 31 at 08:30 Jon Thompson also of Langley will present 'Ground-Based Facility for NASP Engine Testing. Burt Rutan is presenting 'How To Flight Test' at the same time...damn damn damn.....which one? On Sunday Aug 1 at 13:00 Marta Meyer of NASA Ames is presenting 'Flight Test Engineer's Role in the SR-71 Mach 3 Aircraft Program. This one I can get to, I think... Where was the Mig-21 parked, I wanted some pictures. \ /___________________ Sam EAA # 98866 \_____/ | Komets in four; Turner cup Chicago/ | * | O to Ft. Wayne; San Diego Gulls I | Ft. The article includes a picture from the end of the runway showing two golfers walking past. Assuming this is a shot of Machrihanish, (athough I'm not sure I have that much faith in the British press), someone sitting there would get an excellent view of anything leaving the field! Certainly much better than at Groom Lake etc :-) Simon +:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::+ :: :: :: :: Simon Storry :: email: sstorry@axion.bt.co.uk :: :: :: voice: +44 473 646642 :: :: Mail: Rm 306, SSTF :: fax : +44 473 643019 :: :: British Telecom :: :: :: Laboratories ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::+ :: Martlesham Heath :: :: IPSWICH :: `Nothing's really a problem... :: IP5 7RE :: if you've got a big enough hammer!' :: UK :: +::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::+ ------------------------------ From: seb@tadtec.co.uk Date: Thu, 13 May 93 13:51:32 BST Subject: Landing strips & Aurora Ian Woodrow kindly provided the following data earlier: RAF Valley (on the island of Angelsey, Wales) r/w 14 TORA 7520 ft TODA/ASDA 7662 ft LDA 7515 ft r/w 32 TORA/ASDA 7520 ft TODA 7552 ft LDA 7518 ft - --------------------------------- That's no big deal compared to other fields. RAF Macrihanish (near Cambeltown (southern tip of Kintyre peninsula), Scotland) r/w 11 TORA/ASDA 10003 ft TODA 10462 ft LDA 9439 ft r/w 29 TORA/ASDA 10003 ft TODA 10029 ft LDA 8684 ft The abbrevs mean:- TORA Take-off run available TODA Take-off distance available ASDA Accelerate stop distance available LDA Landing distance available So, does the claim recently circulated from the Press re Mac. having one of the longest military landing strips in Europe stand up? Secondly, is it feasible for Aurora to have landed at Valley, given the kind of configurations we've been discussing here? Does the SR-71 Pilot's Manual give figures for how much runway the Blackbird requires, and if so, how do they fit in with this?
