If you want to keep up to date on the status of SSRT (DC-X, SX-2, Aero- ballistic rocket, etc.), and want to participate in political efforts to support this program, send me a brief email. I will either add you to my mailing list, or pass along your address to SAS. ...Russ Schnapp Email: netcom!metaflow!rschnapp or rschnapp@Metaflow.com or rschnapp@ACM.org Metaflow Technologies Voice: 619/452-6608x230; FAX: 619/452-0401 La Jolla, California Unless otw specified, I`m speaking only for myself! ------------------------------ From: Rick Pavek Date: Fri, 10 Sep 1993 10:54:35 -0700 Subject: Mac stuff I recently emailed some mac icons and cursors out to a few people on the list. If there are any other mac users on the list that want some different color icons (for system 7) and some new cursors (for either system...) send me your email address and I'll get them out to you. I've got some new cursors besides the blackbird example, now have the B-58, X-1, X-15, and Sputnik (well, they're passable. not too much you can really do with a 16x16 bitmap even if it is color). I think the B-58 one looks the best, but whatever. If you want them, let me know. If you've got a different type of system and can accept a pict, gif, or similar type of file, I'd make them available as a bitmap collection. I know many of you on this list aren't model builders and could care less about that. However some of you would probably be interested in a 'recent' (1988) photo of Groom Lake (the place that doesn't exist) if you could get one. The new Testors SR-75 model evidently has a reproduction of such a photo on the instruction sheet for the model, along with a 1968 photo of the same place. You can see the development that has occurred at that location over that 20 year period. No I haven't seen the model, John Andrews called this morning and informed me of this. The addresses on how to obtain your own copy of BOTH photos is also indicated in the instruction sheet. No, Testors is not selling copies of those photos. The 1988 photo is a Russian sat. image obtained through the French (SPOT). So the implication is, if the Russians have images of Groom, who are we trying to keep the place secret from? I don't know how much the newer SPOT photo would cost. I've heard these things are not cheap. Maybe if enough people request a copy, the price will come down :) Larry ------------------------------ From: Rick Pavek Date: Fri, 10 Sep 1993 13:40:43 -0700 Subject: Those Mac cursors Well, I've gotten a couple of responses back from my offer... but I need to reword it... I've already sent the set of Mac cursors and icons out to: lind@eng.umd.edu LOCKHART@uci.edu johnk@consilium.com ijb@unb.ca tom@gordian.com brosen@ames.arc.nasa.gov peterl@u.washington.edu and I suspect that since it's a 58K file, it may not have gotten through to some mail addresses listed above. So if your name is one of the above and you haven't seen it yet (peter I know about) then let me know and I'll use an alternate method. I may impose on phil and put them up on the harbor ftp site. I'll try a simple email for new names I get (or missed the first time). Next try will include: James.C.Anderson@williams.edu peterl@ocean.washington.edu flamm@shab00.larc.nasa.gov Thanks for the bandwidth. Maybe I'm jaded, but I just don't think they're worth that much... You cannot read any license plates (and there isn't a single sign to read anyway... X-)... you could draw a very accurate map, but what good would that do? No, the primary value of this photo would be to wag it in Uncle Sam's face and say "Heyou! Lookee here! What's This?". Of course, they say something like "Duh, I dunno." (Or "That's nice".) The U.S. government got all bent out of shape when this became commercially available because of security concerns. It had limited LandSat to 65m (200') resolution for this reason. You also can't get LandSat photomosaics of the Aleutians (as opposed to the rest of the U.S.) because of security restrictions. They don't want us to know where the installations are located. I say US, because the Russians spotted them with their satellites. A strange game... Hmmm... does that mean their "reproduction" is of reduced quality? >No, Testors is not selling copies of those photos. The 1988 photo >is a Russian sat. image obtained through the French (SPOT). Well, if the instructions are only on how to obtain it *directly* from Spot Image Co., then naturally that means some big bucks. >So the implication is, if the Russians have images of Groom, >who are we trying to keep the place secret from? US of course, since OBVIOUSLY the Russians have been taking high resolution images of Groom for *decades*. Clearly it would have long been in their "top 10 list" of high-priority CONUS imaging targets. They must have a whole warehouse full of those pics. Hmmm... how about a book: "Groom Lake: The First 40 Years" ? :) - -dean ------------------------------ End of Skunk Works Digest V4 #10 ******************************** To subscribe to skunk-works-digest, send the command: subscribe skunk-works-digest in the body of a message to "listserv@harbor.ecn.purdue.edu".
