You think the Confederated States are the only enemy of the U.S. Even if you assume that countries like Iraq are not interested in the Aleutians, I'm sure that many terrorist organizations would be over joyed to blow-up U.S. military posts (if they could). Also I'm not sure what capabilities the Chinese have, but I do know that they have ICBM's that need targeting info. Spot pictures make great planning/targeting aids. Also even if the Confederated States do have photos of Groom Lake, I'm sure that the Groom Lake personel know exactly when one is supposed to pass. They can therefore hid whatever it is they are working on. Now if U.S. private citizens take photos at strange times then they can't hid things. In fact I think many of the people who do this are doing the enemies of the U.S. a great service. Don't get me wrong, I don't think that everything that is kept hushed up should be. But I think that people with no knowledge of the project shouldn't be deciding whether it should be black or not. Just my $ 0.05 (inflation) Jim B. P.S. I know I'm paranoid, but am I paranoid enough? They would hardly go after Groom Lake though. Also, i'm not so sure how much value Spot photos would have for "terrorist" purposes, but they can certainly buy them from Spot Image Co. just like anyone else could. >Also I'm not sure what capabilities the Chinese have, but I do know that >they have ICBM's that need targeting info. China has their own satelites. >Also even if the Confederated States do have photos of Groom Lake, No "if"s about it. :-) > I'm sure that the Groom Lake personel know exactly when one is supposed > to pass. They can therefore hid whatever it is they are working on. Oh, you can count on it! >Now if U.S. private citizens take photos at strange times then >they can't hid things. But they can certainly shut things down if their perimeter security board starts to light up. >In fact I think many of the people who do this are doing the >enemies of the U.S. a great service. Well, I don't think that if Jim Goodall (or whoever) takes a simple long range photo of Groom Lake it is doing a service to anyone other than U.S. taxpayers. Even a close up photo of Aurora itself would not provide much "service" for the likes of a Saddam or whatnot. Besides, if the USSR was still in business then any operating Aurora would almost certainly not be a secret to them. They might have even had the operating manual by now. Taxpayers are always the LAST to know. >Don't get me wrong, I don't think that everything that is kept hushed up >should be. But I think that people with no knowledge of the project >shouldn't be deciding whether it should be black or not. And i'm sure they never have. Why put it here in the skunk-works list? Well, let's see. Ah, I know, the story is 'stealthy'. After all, I've not seen anyting about it in the media... ;-) Did you know that while Bosnia is melting down and Arafat and Rabin are playing buddy-buddy that Iran slipped 10,000 troops into Azerbaijan (former Soviet territory)? Want to guess where the next flareup is going to be? Hey, I watch for the little tidbits that noone else seems to notice. Like the one about where a large percentage of the Palestinians the Israelis have caged up in it's refugee camps aren't Moslem, they're Christians... Didn't hear about that one either, I'll bet. See? Stealth news. Thanks for the bandwidth. Another part to this story is that Turkey has threatened to declare war on Armenia if it does not halt it's advances into Azerbaijan. Russia then replied(sp?) that it would go to war to protect the former border of the Soviet Union. Also don't forget Russian troops were involved border clashes and raids into Afghanistan, less than two weeks ago. I know it's not skunky stuff but I better with politics than technology.
