I received a notice in the mail today from the BLM about the hearing. The bad part is that it listed 6, count them 6, people who sent letters to the BLM about this blatant land grab to prevent people from seeing the aircraft billions of "black" dollars have been spent on. It also lists an address for a Col. Bennett, listed as the Commander of the 554th Range Squadron, Nellis AFB, NV 89191. Just out of curiousity -- is this the base commander up at Area 51?? So, why haven't more people written in opposition to this land grab?? I will post my original Skunk Works Digest posting on this again, for those who missed it. It's not to late to save White Sides. NOTE: The original notice in the Federal Register, Oct. 18, 1993 was apparently changed in a secondary notice on Nov. 5, 1993. The Air Force now plans to hold this land until 2001! Paul McGinnis / TRADER@cup.portal.com - --------------------cut here ------------------------------------ As readers of this group may already know, the Air Force has proposed taking almost 4000 acres of public land from the BLM (Bureau of Land Management, Dpeartment of the Interior) to prevent people from seeing the secret Air Force facility at Groom Lake, Nevada. This includes the famous mountain known as White Sides. I encourage you to voice your opposition to this land seizure, to the BLM at the address shown. I will present 2 documents -- first, a summary of the seizure request, and second, my letter written in opposition to this seizure. I have deleted my home address from my letter, but if anyone wants to write to me by mail, I can be reached at: Paul McGinnis P.O. The purpose of the withdrawal is to ensure the public safety and the safe and secure operation of activities in the Nellis Air Force Range Complex. - ------------------ my letter to the BLM about this seizure --------------- November 24, 1993 Nevada State Director Bureau of Land Management P.O. Box 12000 Reno, NV 89520 This letter is in response to the proposed land withdrawal described on page 53745 of the Federal Register of October 18, 1993 [NV-930-4210-06; N-57922]. The Air Force claims that this withdrawal "is to ensure the public safety and secure operations in the Nellis Air Force Range Complex." I am opposed to allowing the Air Force to withdraw this land. The Air Force wants to withdraw this land to prevent the American taxpayers from seeing the secret Air Force facility at Groom Lake, located roughly near 115 deg. 45' W, 37 deg. 15' N, not to ensure public safety. It should be noted that this facility is routinely photographed by satellites from other countries -- in fact, recently, high resolution Russian satellite photographs of this facility were sold to an American citizen for $1900 by SPOT Imaging of Reston, VA. The Air Force wants to seize this land to prevent Americans from seeing photographs of the facility taken from the land that they want to seize. An example of this kind of photograph appeared in the March 1993 issue of "Popular Science" magazine. It should also be pointed out that the Air Force seized 89,600 acres of land in 1984 as described in House of Representatives report 98-1046. When the Air Force took this land, it claimed the land would be returned to public use on December 31, 1987. It is now late 1993 and this land still hasn't been returned. In their request to withdraw the land, the Air Force indicates that they plan to return the land to public use after 2 years. Given their past history, it seems safe to assume they don't intend to return the land. For these reasons, I am opposed to letting the Air Force have the 3972 acres they have requested.
