Michael Matthew Guslick writes: >If no one else has said it yet, I will.... > >GIF! >GIF! >GIF! Yes. I shot some fairly good shots. Got them back Sat. When we scan them they need to be brightened up a bit probably. They're on the dark side (no light source from underneath unfortunately) and my experience is that scanning can make them even darker. But actually I like the effect. Standing just to the rear of the LCO's cockpit and looking up at the D, the D looks like a black BAT! One of the crane guys was standing next to me looking up at it after we were finished with the crane and he summed it up nicely: "mean looking little thing isn't it"? It actually isn't little at all! It just looks little up on the Mother. When you're standing next to the D by itself, it is quite BIG. It's all fuel tank! No wonder it could fly for over several hours at Mach 3.8. The little RJ-43 ramjet engine is way in the back and the inlet is way in the front. One of the Marquardt guys said it was the longest ramjet they had ever worked on. Paul Mangan writes: >And I respond: >Were they smart enough to video tape the event and is the video going > to be offered for sale? Yes they did shoot video. There was a video guy with hard hat up on the M during the mating. I don't know if they will offer any for sale. The BIG event is supposed to be this coming weekend, with dignataries and all. I'm sure they'll shoot that as well. During the mating, I noticed this small furry purple dragon up on the M, right next to the pylon. I asked about it. It was Figment. It seems that Figment is SMOF's good luck charm. He's involved with all the tough and important efforts associated with the museum. After the D was down and stabilized, and the M was taking the weight OK, and we didn't have an MD-21 exhibit that was rotating for takeoff ... :) ..., they put Figment at the end of one of the D's pitot booms. I have some shots of that too. By the way. Just a bit of MD-21 trivia. In the "Kelly's Way" video, in the shot of the black MD-21 that's taxiing towards the camera that then turns to the right. If I recall correctly, you can't see the tail number well, if at all. We now know that shot is of 941 carrying drone 506! The 50th Anniv book indicates that 941/506 was a successful combination. According to the book, it was 941/504 that was fatal. Since there were only 4 launches, that allows one to figure out which M (ie: 940) launched the other two successful D-21 missions, that's if the book doesn't call that out (I don't think it mentions in every case which M launched which drone - I might be wrong on that however). It seems (not entirely verified yet) that 941 was all black and 940 was natural titanium with black leading edges. So, how come you didn't load it into something like Aldus Photoshop and put a little UFO zipping by in the sky? Heheheheh... Very cool pictures, though. I think the funky stuff on the tripod was a radar motion detector. Seen something similar in the no-man's land at the WPPSS Reactor # 1 at Hanford, except they have them mounted about 1 or 2 feet above the ground on a post. Any vietnam vets who are good at finding the in-ground motion detectors that have to be peppering the area? I wonder what they would do if you found one on the public area, and took it home... Anyone familiar with Hanford? I have a friend who works there, but she doesn't work in the 300 or 3000 areas... I guess security there has really gone down.
