The 'plane is overall light grey with lo-vis markings. The blurb under the photo describes how its used to confuse orientation from a distance. Looks effective, but doesn't have a helmet painted in or anything. Any views on the effectiveness of this? At long-range (eg a BVR launch position) it would have no effect (IMVHO), at close range (eg Guns dogfight) you'd be able to see the tail V, and at mid range (eg heat seekers) the orientation probably wouldn't matter - having 2 apparent canopies would make it _easier_ to see which direction the plane was pointing. [The above from someone who's never flown in a fast jet, let alone tried to shoot another one down!] jason ------------------------------ From: larry@ichips.intel.com Date: Thu, 27 Jan 1994 09:54:59 -0800 Subject: Another Boom in Central Florida on Tues. My book about real-time systems had a line about a failed test-launch of a missile. The story was that the requirements for launching robots and rocket was faulty. The rocket-engine ignited while stil hanging from the wing with a vicious spin as result. When did this happen ? Where ? Who was the pilot ? Did the pilot got his ass out ? - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Stefan 'Stetson' Skoglund I "Viggen | i tiden *)" sp2stes1@ida.his.se I | University of Skoevde, Sweden I _____/0\_____ - --------------------------------I ____________O(.)O___________ I -+- O -+- I *) Viggen with two Rb04 ------------------------------ From: clark@acs.bu.edu (Jeff Clark) Date: Thu, 27 Jan 94 21:21:10 -0500 Subject: F-14 Ferris picture Hi. I have the picture I recently mentioned which shows two F-14s in Keith Ferris' splinter camoflage scheme. I got showings of interest in it, so I have it in my account. Should I post it or send it to prm@harbor.ecn.purdue.edu for placement in the SW archives? Let me know. In a similar vein, the magazine where I first saw this was a British aircraft magazine that included model a/c decals in it. (I can't remember the name). This was about 1985 or so. Anyways, it also had pictures and drawings of another Navy experiment. It seems that at some point in the 1970s they tried out USAF-style green/brown/tan/white-underside schemes on at least one carrier wing. I think this was to see if it could help in Vietnam. The scheme was discontinued because the deck crew found it hard to see the dark-colored planes during night operations on the carrier. I am working on a model with this scheme and would like to include other planes that had the scheme applies to them. Would anyone know where I could get such information?
