They are of pull-push configuration, with twin booms. The prototype SA 2-38A, which has a span of 20m, a gross weight of 2500 kg and a payload of 450 kg, is powered by two piston engines and will fly in August. The choice of two engines is to increase safety, as the aircraft can be operated on only one. Launch customers are the US Coast Guard and one other unnamed US customer. The SA 2-38A has two seats side-by-side, but Schweizer is also working on a three seat variant for an unnamed overseas government customer. The CPU cycles, disk space, and a lion's share of the administrative effort have been very graciously donated by Oregon State University. A big "Thank You" to Kean Stump, skunk-works subscriber and administrator at orst.edu. The archives are available via anonymous ftp to mail.orst.edu in the usual directory (/pub/skunk-works). There is a new feature now - there is a public upload area for skunk-works. The directory is /pub/skunk-works/incoming. If you put anything in there, please drop a note to either prm@mail.orst.edu or skunk-works-owner@mail.orst.edu and let me know it's there and what it is. Mail through the old address will continue to work for a short time; please switch any aliases you may have to the new addresses as soon as possible! For posting, send mail to: skunk-works@mail.orst.edu or skunk-works-digest@mail.orst.edu For automated subscribe/unsubscribe requests, mail to: majordom@mail.orst.edu For problems with the list, etc, mail to skunk-works-owner@mail.orst.edu (or to me, prm@mail.orst.edu). They were training to take over the LCO (D-21 Launch Control Officer) job when the MD-21 went operational. I found out that these gentlemen had come from the B-58 program (lucky dogs!). So I had to ask them to compare a ride in the M-21 with a ride in the B-58A. It was one of those rare and wonderful occasions when you ask a question like that and can just feel and see a little of what it was like, in the eyes of both these guys as they responded. Hangar fluing at its best! The answer? Well, the answer at first surprised me, but when you know the B-58, after awhile you're not so surprised. "The B-58 was a Cadillac", came the response, with an approving nod from the other USAF LCO. "That thing [the B-58] was so fast that we had to be careful taking off so that we didn't break the sound barrier soon after takeoff." They indicated that had happened at Carswell on several occasions and they really had to be careful not to boom the neighborhood at 400 ft after takeoff. I didn't believe my ears, but the wall-to-wall grins showed they weren't kidding when they informed me that it was great sport for the B-58 crews to roll-in on, and BOUNCE, F-105s etc! I said ROLL-IN? They nodded yes, we used to roll the B-58 completely around. "We'd sneak up on a F-105 or something and then announce our presence on the radio, much to the consternation of the fighter crew, who would say something like, "Bombers aren't supposed to be able to do this kind of thing"! Sometimes some TAC officer would even complain. Anyway, my question evoked a continuous glorification of the Hustler. "You could be at the end of the runway in that thing, let go of the brakes, and be at 30,000 ft doing Mach 1.5 in 90 seconds". Not bad for a bomber designed in the early 50s, with 3 guys on board, a fuel load and a weapon. I asked for their opinion why the B-58 was done away with so quickly. The answer, LeMay. I've heard this answer from more than one source actually, and they echoed it. LeMay was an old big bomber guy, and at that time, he wanted the XB-70. He killed the Hustler and only got 2 XB-70s. Too bad we didn't save more Hustlers! One of my personal all time favorites! By the way, thanks to Phil and Purdue for a great skunk.works mail list, and thanks also to Oregon State and Kean Stump for taking it over, with best wishes for a continuing successful mail list.
