(LMSC) have started testing the Sea Shadow in battlegroup operations off the coast of Southern California. The tests are designed to explore the application of various advanced technologies to surface ships including ship control, structures, automation, sea keeping and signature control as well as operating in joint exercises with other Navy ships. The Sea Shadow is a limited mobility platform used for testing and research of shipboard advanced technologies. The ship's sloped sides are an extension of the angled struts, whose design are driven by signature, hydrodynamic and structural considerations. The Sea Shadow was built in the mid-1980s by Lockheed in the Hughes Mining Barge in Redwood City, Calif. The vehicle is 160-ft. long, 70-ft. wide, displaces 560 tons and has a draft of 14 ft. It has a maximum speed of approximately 13 knots and is powered by a twin screw diesel electronic drive. It is owned by the Navy and operated by LMSC personnel. Several technologies from the Sea Shadow have been incorporated into Navy ships including signature control on Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. Also, Sea Shadow's Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) technology has been incorporated into the TAGOS-19, a twin hull ocean surveillance ship. Several radio items seem to say: 23 Mar,At Pope AFB which is next to/quasi part of FT Benning (Home of Airborne..), An F16 and a "transport" porobably a Hercules collided in the air, "while landing". The F16 crew ejected OK. The Hercules, with crew and paratroopers, landed ok. The F16 "blew up", and the pieces fell on a transport on the ground Which had troops on board going up for practice. Substantial (15?) deaths in the a/c on the ground. regards dwp ------------------------------ From: TRADER@cup.portal.com Date: Thu, 24 Mar 94 08:33:57 PST Subject: Re: CLASSIC OUTBOARD In an earlier posting, Bill Robinson wrote: >I think Paul McGinnis' description of CLASSIC OUTBOARD as a spy satellite >program may be incorrect. I assumed that CLASSIC OUTBOARD was a satellite system, because of where I saw the reference, and the fact that CLASSIC WIZARD is a Navy satellite program. I saw the CLASSIC OUTBOARD reference in the context of a small Senate hearing on funding "overhead" reconnaissance systems. This hearing was held on June 15, 1993, and was chaired by Senator J. James Exon. The transcript of the hearing was heavily censored, but the censor did an uneven job. For example, there was a comment from a Navy admiral to the effect that "a few years ago [deleted] never left the Green Vault on our ships." But, they also printed a written statement from the guy with a quote like "until recently, satellite imagery never left the Green Vault..." At the end of the hearing, there was this revealing exchange: Senator: "There has been talk about [deleted]. Do we have [deleted]?" military witness: "Yes Senator, we have [deleted]." They could be referring to anything - for example, perhaps what was said was: Senator: "There has been talk about a new NRO golf course for senior officials and members of Congress. Do we have such a golf course?" military witness: "Yes Senator, we have such a golf course. See you on the greens on Thursday." Just speculation on my part of course... Dependinbg on _which_ ones in NY State, there was a set, ohhhh, 10 or so years ago, written up into a book. _after_ the book came out, it was found tha local private fliers had been playing an elaborate practical joke, by flying in formation, with extraneouslights on. It was documented as to times, dates, places and paticipants names. This took place along the mid Hudson River Valley. This was an ongoing thing that the spoofers did over a number of years. (Yes, it was a silly, dangerous prank to play. People do silly, dangerous things. It probably violated a bunch of FFA Regs.) My first thought, on reading the Michigan report was of this. However IF the Mach 5 speeds are verified, the Michigan report is clearly "something else". Similarly, if the "unexplained events in New York state" are not the incident in question, then disregard. ------------------------------ From: Geoff.Miller@corp.sun.com (Geoff Miller) Date: Thu, 24 Mar 1994 09:20:00 +0800 Subject: Re: F-16/Herc collision According to the story I read this morning in the San Francisco Chronicle, the F-16 (a two-seat D-model) did in fact collide with a C-130, which was returning from a drop mission; there were no paratroopers aboard, just the 5 crew. Pieces of the F-16 fell onto a C-141, which *did* have paratroopers aboard, setting it on fire. Also, other pieces of the fighter skidded into a staging area occupied by more paratroopers who were waiting to board an airplane. This is where most of the fatalities occurred, according to the article. - --Geoff ------------------------------ From: George Allegrezza 24-Mar-1994 1324 Date: Thu, 24 Mar 94 13:19:52 EST Subject: RE: F-16/Herc collision Many, many USA personnel are being transported to Brooke Army Burn Center in San Antonio. :-( George George Allegrezza | "I'm going to Euro-Disney!"
