Evidently local concern over the economic impact of reduced status prompted the MoD to officially announce this change. Previously the MoD had though the base too small for a formal announcement. The 198 RAF personnel and 34 civilians employed at the bas will be reduced to 65 RAF personnel and 19 civilians. The field became a military base in 1919. Recently its 10,000 ft runway had only seen intermittent use, including regular visits by SR-71s until their retirement [in 1990]. The article also states that it is believed the 'AURORA' project used the field in early 1993. [Actually the reports of this stem from the end (Nov. or so) of 1991.] Larry ------------------------------ End of Skunk Works Digest V5 #81 ******************************** To subscribe to skunk-works-digest, send the command: subscribe skunk-works-digest in the body of a message to "majordomo@mail.orst.edu".
