Might be a little late for some people, already, but I just remembered hearing about it last Friday. - mark ------------------------------ From: larry@ichips.intel.com Date: Mon, 12 Dec 1994 17:21:49 -0800 Subject: Re: (I) A-17s and UFOs at your supermarket now George Allegrezza writes: >The January '95 PM has a cover story, "UFOs are Real," which speculates on the >existence of a USAF program to develop and fly lenticular flying machines. There was really no speculation in it at all, actually. In fact they even repudiated Bob Lazar - good job! So the story was good actually, except that it was a bit shallow, as there were other disk shaped spacecraft and aircraft that were studied that they didn't include in the piece. They just had the standard ones that everybody knows about. The referred item in _The Observer_ had a huge front-page picture of Groom Lake at night (headline something like "This is Dreamland. Officially it doesn't exist. People die here."), and maybe half a page inside with the Soviet satellite photo. If I hadn't recycled it I would type it in. The story is quite interesting; it concerns a law suit attempting to get the US government to admit to the existence of the base so that they can be sued for negligence in the incineration of toxic waste there, which negligence has allegedly led to the death or serious injury of several technicians. It also mentions the intended enclosure of the various viewpoints of the base. The item makes it clear that the existence of Area 51 is well-known (it does not 'reveal the existence of a secret base in Nevada,' as _Le Monde_ would have you believe). It describes the commute plane for technicians from Las Vegas, and some other stuff (how Area 51 was made famous by that UFO guy, use for SR-71, &c). The major factual garbage in the article was what it said in passing about Aurora (paraphrase: "A new plane, codenamed Aurora, is under development here. At 5000 mph it will be the fastest manmade vehicle ever"). The Observer is one of the two or three serious Sunday papers in Britain.
