Hi Skunkworkers, Only mildly skunky this. Yesterday, 16th May, RAF BAe Nimrod R1 lost on air worthyness test flight. Pilot had to ditch in the sea (Moray Firth) after two engine fire and is being praised for his airmanship. All seven crew members were picked up by helicopter and are OK. RAF video of the rescue has been shown on British TV. This Nimrod is one of only three R1 versions built. The R1 being special electronic rec. type. I think that this is the first Nimrod loss after 25 years of service. If anyone wants to reply, you can. While I'm doing this, I may as well mention that a friend across the pond sent me an interesting little book on the SR-71. What makes it interesting is that the book is written and published in Russia. Once I receive a translation to English, I'll let you know if I discover anything unusual or unexpected....as in are there viewpoints that are unique to the book being in Russian. It has technical data and I'm sure the data is metric rather than in English units. The company that published the book is called AVICO PRESS and their address is listed in Moscow. I do not know the cost of the manual however if anyone really wants one, I will see if I can get some additional copies. The company also had a book on the F-117 (now THAT might be even more interesting). Just thought i would put my bit in. 1.Stealth bombers do not fly very slowly and lit up very brightly, its not very stealthy. Any aircraft however does fly reasonably slowly and are well lit on approach to land. The area you live in does affect the possibility of what you heard being an aircraft or not. The AW&ST B-2 flight test report of a few weeks ago indicated that the first B-2 was accepted by USAF ACC on Dec. 17, 1993, and that the 509th Bomb Wing launched its first training sortie 5 days later on Dec. 22, 1993. The 509th has 6 B-2 Spirits in operation with the seventh to be delivered last month. Also, AW&ST has indicated that discussions were underway about the possibility of sending a B-2 to the Paris Airshow this June. The B-2 needed a number of approvals for this flight to occurr. So, it sounds highly unlikely that the skies of Norwich were occupied by Spirits back in 1993.
