Rebentisch) Date: Thu, 31 Aug 95 16:17:16 EDT Subject: F-16XL Another reason for the cancellation of any additional development work on the F-16XL (which appeared to have exceptional performance) was that it was competing against the F-15E for the strike mission. The Air Force planned to pull about 400 airframes out of C/D version production to fill that roll. The F-15E had the advantage of requiring only minor modifications and equipment upgrades, while the F-16E required a new wing and engine (along with the equipment upgrades). The F-15E also had about twice the bombload of the F-16E. There may also have been some contribution from the fact that the F-15 at the time was getting to be expensive to produce, and any increase in production rate would bring the cost down, while the F-16 was already relatively inexpensive in comparison. I had source of high range military from Venezuela who told me that they got "a couple of F-14". I don't know if this is true. Also, I have a friend down there that he told me that saw a AWACS, probably the E-2. This may be a AWACS that belongs to U.S.Navy that was doing exercicies with Venezuela Air Force. Try http://www.dfrc.nasa.gov/ and work your way from there. Current projects include the SR-71 and the photo archives are really good. F-4 Phantom phanatics will enjoy the page in my .sig. Enjoy it now--it's about to turn in to an F-18 or F-16 VISTA, as soon as I get my flights in September. (Someone commented that NASA sure got a lot of DOD castoffs--so we do, and we have a wonderful time with them. The F-18s are a great example of this.) Only two contries have ever had the F-14 - the US and Iran. We sent a couple of F-14As to the Shaw when he was there. The Tomact + Phoenix discouraged the overflights of MiG-25 recon aircraft that were doing overflights at the time. I don't recall the total number, but it was very low. - -- megazone@world.std.com 510-735-8583 MegaZone's Waste Of Time Moderator: anime fanfic archive, ftp.std.com /archives/anime-fan-works; rec.arts.anime.stories - Maintainer: Ani Difranco Mailing List - Mail to majordomo@world.std.com with 'subscribe ani-difranco' in the body. ------------------------------ From: "Robin J. Three production blocks of Block 90 F-14As were purchased by the Shah in 1974 and 1975, with two orders consisting of 40 aircraft each. Production details are as follows: BuNos. Total # F-14A-GR-05 160299-160328 30 F-14A-GR-10 160329-160360 32 F-14A-GR-15 160361-160378 18 -- 80 First deliveries were on 27 Jan 76; deployment was in four squadrons of the Imperial Iranian Air Force. A total of 79 of 80 aircraft was eventually delivered, but the Iranian revolution that overthrew the Shah intervened. Aircraft #80 was impounded by the United States government and was seen operating at PMTC Point Mugu. I've heard a report that this particular F-14A, being a fairly early model, is now at Davis-Monthan AFB in mothballs. Venezuela does not operate F-14s of any sort, although it does have a healthy contingent of 24 F-16As and 6 F-16Bs, all purchased in 1982. It does not operate any variant of the Grumman E-2, either, nor does it operate E-3s. Hope this helps a bit. ____________________________________________________________________________ Robin J.
