Is radiography the main choice ?..I'm wondering if ultrasonics or dye pen are applicable. Also how accessible certain areas of the a/c are, which would influence which technique can be used. I know that NASA use Modal Analysis very successfully on the SSME, but is this technique used on airframes ? Does the SR-71 for instance, present additional airframe and component testing problems because of the very high temperatures it's materials are exposed to. What's the effect of years of Mach 3 then cooling Mach 3 then cooling on the airframe and at what point might it become a problem ? D ------------------------------ From: Robin Bjorklund Date: Fri, 1 Sep 1995 13:59:50 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Books on stealth and UAV design I am working on a project for school (I'm a senior in aerospace engineering) to design a high-altitude, long-range UAV. We are in the research phase right now, and I would like to hear about any ideas that you may have. Specifically, could you possibly recommend any sources of info (AIAA books, etc.) which detail the design of UAV aircraft? Also, I wish to add the dimension of stealthiness to the project, so, any ideas there might be helpful as well. To keep this request close to our charter, any idea where I could get info (specs such as geometry, fuel consumption, engine type, etc.) for the new Dark Star UAV, or any other stealthy UAV? Right now, I am thinking about something along the lines of dual propulsion. A typical jet turbine engine for take-off and cruise to altitude, and an electric powered engine for loitering (a 24 hour loiter time is required!). BTW - If you are curious, this design project is in colaboration with the AIAA and Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft System Undergraduate Team Aircraft Design Competition. robin :p - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- . -- . Slight correction - HSCT = High Speed Civil Transport Lorenzo ------------------------------ From: Kathryn & Andreas Gehrs-Pahl Date: Fri, 1 Sep 1995 15:59:41 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Ching-Kuo IDF and F-16XL errors Thanks to Kuang-Chung Chao and Larry for the corrections. It got late, and I got sloppy. I just didn't check any references this time, and didn't remember it exactly right. The error, about Northrop/GE's involvement with IDF, I probably made because the IDF looks a bit like the F/A-18 Hornet. And the meaning of HSCT was a guess (got the Transport right, though). :) - -- Andreas - --- --- Andreas & Kathryn Gehrs-Pahl E-Mail: schnars@ais.org 313 West Court St. #305 or: gpahl@raptor.csc.flint.umich.edu Flint, MI 48502-1239 Tel: (810) 238-8469 WWW URL: http://www.umcc.umich.edu/~schnars/ - --- --- ------------------------------ End of Skunk Works Digest V5 #407 ********************************* To subscribe to skunk-works-digest, send the command: subscribe skunk-works-digest in the body of a message to "majordomo@mail.orst.edu".
