Convair made a very similar twin engine recip. flown in large numbers by AA among others. The aircraft was also flown by USAF as the T-29, which was the trainer for all navigators until the early 60's. Convair, known also as the Convair Div. of General Dynamics, has disappeared into the bowels of Lockheed Martin sort of joining with the descendants of the old Maryland flying boat maker. ------------------------------ From: Charles_E._Smith.wbst200@xerox.com Date: Wed, 3 Jan 1996 09:59:22 PST Subject: What happened to Convair? When was the last time anyone rode in a Convair 880? Many people in the buisness claim this is the A/C that killed Convair. The designers missed by a couple of drag points, and the economy wasn`t there. You probably have seen an 880. Most of the classic crash-test films for jet transports, if you look closely, feature 880`s. I think thats where most ended up!
