Smith Museum Aviation Lecture Series September 14, 1998 1:49 PM EDT FORT WORTH, Texas, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Jack Gordon, president of Lockheed-Martin's secret project development operations -- best known as the "Skunk Works" -- will make a rare public appearance as part of the 1998 Rolls-Royce/American Airlines Aviation Lecture Series. He speaks at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, at the Grapevine Convention Center. The Skunk Works, located in Palmdale, Calif., is birthplace for such famous, yet mysterious aircraft as the U-2, A-12 and SR-71 spyplanes, and the F-117A stealth fighter of Operation Desert Storm fame. The Skunk Works was formed in 1943 and has a long tradition of providing the advanced aircraft and spacecraft required to meet national defense needs. "Because of the very nature of Skunk Works activities, Jack Gordon seldom accepts invitations for public speaking engagements," said Jay Miller, museum director and author of the official Skunk Works history. "We're especially honored he chose to participate in our lecture series and look forward to getting a rare glimpse into the opaque world of high-tech, top-secret aerospace development." Gordon was named president of Lockheed-Martin's Advanced Development Projects division, or Skunk Works, in 1994. He had been the division's assistant general manager since 1987 and was appointed a vice president in 1989. Gordon was named an executive vice president in 1990. He joined Lockheed in 1963 as a propulsion engineer, working on the company's supersonic transport proposal. He transferred to the Skunk Works in 1964, where he participated in the development of the U-2 and SR-71. Later, he served as chief engineer for the F-117A and was program director for the Lockheed portion of the F-22A advanced tactical fighter. Lecture tickets are $15 per person, $12.50 for C.R. Smith Museum members. Discounts for season tickets and group admission are available. Tickets are available by calling 817-967-5534. Proceeds benefit the museum. The next and final speaker for the 1998 lecture series is Keith Ferris, renowned aviation artist, who will appear on Dec. 7. The lecture series began March 6 with a sell-out crowd for Brig. Gen. "Chuck" Yeager. The 1999 series schedule is being finalized. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Sep 1998 14:52:38 -0700 From: "Erik Hoel" Subject: RE: Gordon to Speak Tom C Robison wrote: > Jack Gordon, President of Lockheed-Martin "Skunk Works," Speaks > Oct. 9 at Rolls-Royce/American Airlines C.R. Trim drag is a beast which plagues high-speed delta wing configurations. As an aircraft accelerates through the transonic region, the vehicle's center of pressure moves aft. This means the pilot has to apply an increasing degree of elevon input to keep the a/c from pitching up. But application of elevon induces drag, which hinders the a/c's performance. By designing the SR-71 with the 2-degree upcant, coupled with the use of chines, this adverse drag is offset. Simple, eh? As I understand it, it is not so much a case of the engines being canted downwards, rather that the forward fuselage is canted upward, for aerodynamic reasons. They also seen to have no constraints of human or govnermental law by which they must answer to. CSETI is one of the most far-out and new-age fringe types of UFO believer groups. For example their leader, Greer, believes he can communicate telepathically with aliens. They have been known to hold events like "contact parties", where they get together and shine lights and play music at the sky to attract UFOs. And, of course, each member must leave behind a taped message for their next of kin, just in case they are taken aboard by the mother ship. etc. On one occasion they were under the landing pattern of an airport and they convinced themselves that the strobes from airliners were actually alien spaceships acknowledging their attempts to communicate with flashlights. The group has a history of latching on to most any phony UFO story that comes around. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Sep 1998 16:18:04 -0600 From: Brad Hitch Subject: Re: Ben Rich Comments Wayne Busse wrote: > > For Ben Rich to become a blabbermouth in his waning years, > is so uncharacteristic as to be almost laughable. > > In his last years, numerous interviews nearly always contained > at least one " I can't comment on that.". > For Ben Rich to suddenly leak significant information to an an individual > who would assuredly publicize it, requires a real leap of imagination for me. > > "Unnamed sources", is frequently a footnote synonym for "Bull---- " > > Sign me a strong skeptic, > > Wayne > > ----------------------------------------------------------------- > > >...Ben Rich of Lockheed Skunkworks, prior to his death, confirmed to a > >CSETI consultant that "we already have the means to travel among the > >stars, but these technologies are locked up in black projects and it > >would take an act of God to ever get them out to benefit humanity...". And it's conveniently hard for Ben to refute the quote, of course. My experience is that most of "High Technology" is a pretty much straight-forward extrapolation of technology well-known to the public, or at least to specialists working in the area. For example, at the time the Bell X-1 was being designed and built in secret, what was the state of aerodynamics in the open literature? There were certainly examples of things flying faster than Mach 1, i.e. .50 caliber bullets and V-2 rockets. A rocket-powered plane shaped like a bullet doesn't seem that far out. Even seemingly small amounts of progress often require alot of work - NOTHING is easy when the task is complex, loaded with unknowns, and especially if you aren't even sure it's ultimately possible. Just fabricating the titanium for the SR-71 was a major headache, innocent things like pencil marks could cause local failure in the material. In addition, compartmentalization in a black program inhibits the free exchange of ideas among team members and so progress can become very slow and inefficient. Therefore the distance between white and black world technology isn't necessarily very far. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Sep 1998 21:02:16 -0700 From: "Terry W.
