The A-10 will probably remain in service for another good 10-15 years, and I think some projection plans even have it in service up to 2028. Amongst it's strengths are it's great agility at low speed/level, most of it's components are inetrchangeable from left to right to facilitate repairs, most parts are easy to shape/machine, it's reduced IR signature (hidden engine exhausts & paint). Operable from forward bases close to battle area, Very survivable, redundency, with widely spaced controle/vital systems, most of these vital systems are hielded/protected, and the pilot sits in a Titanium 'bathtub', and as already stated it is flyable even with parts of the wing or an engine missing (although for the moment it still needs a pilot :-)) Unfortunatly the A-10 is not receiving much attention from the AF,and the community has had to improvise for example Pilots use the guidance head of their Maverick for night flying. Although I have the impression that the A-10 is receiving (a bit) more attention now, probably because of it's performance in the Gulf and in Kosovo. And I have to admit the A-10 would probably not win a beauty contest, but I still think it looks much nicer than the A-9...
