The SR began service in 1966 at beale afb Marysville CA. An overseas loction was established at Kadena in 1968. But another vertion of the SR, with one seat , opperated out of kadena prior to this and was operated by the CIA. The old timers told me about this plane. They tried to get parts from the Cia for an SR-71 an were told they would not work. The ownly time SR-71s would land in Thailand is when they would develope mechnical problems. Then a recovery crew would leave Kadena to recover the bird . I tried to get sent acouple of times, but the seven levels aways got to go. When one went down in Korea, its Sgt Cunningham go supply and get a parka your going to Korea. - ------------------------ Yahoo! Groups Sponsor - --------------------~--> DonorsChoose. I don't recall the El Camino catching them but once I did see the pickup truck with pogo sticks and recovery crew catch up and somebody in the back hold the wingtip preventing it from tipping over when stopped....but most of the time they just stopped and tipped to one side. Once on departure...almost immediately after the plane started to roll the plane swerved to the left. The El Camino radio said "Jerk it off" or "Jerk it up"...the plane leaped into the air...reduced his climb rate to almost level for a split second and then pulled up climbing out normally. I kept looking at that where it started takeoff roll and where it got airborne and swear it was airborne in 400'...maybe a little less. Runway lights were 200' apart...so I had good distance reference. Amazing plane. 1 was there when I got there in July 71....sometime in the next 3-9 months 2 more arrived as a flight...I think all 3 were still there when I left in Oct 72. I don't remember any being there when I returned in Aug 74... ********************************* To subscribe to skunk-works-digest, send the command: subscribe skunk-works-digest in the body of a message to "majordomo@netwrx1.com". If you want to subscribe something other than the account the mail is coming from, such as a local redistribution list, then append that address to the "subscribe" command; for example, to subscribe "local-skunk-works": subscribe skunk-works-digest local-skunk-works@your.domain.net To unsubscribe, send mail to the same address, with the command: unsubscribe skunk-works-digest in the body. Administrative requests, problems, and other non-list mail can be sent to georgek@netwrx1.com. A non-digest (direct mail) version of this list is also available; to subscribe to that instead, replace all instances of "skunk-works-digest" in the commands above with "skunk-works". Back issues are available for viewing by a www interface located at: http://www.netwrx1.com/skunk-works/ If you have any questions or problems please contact me at: georgek@netwrx1.com Thanks, George R.
