I'm amazed, but not surprised, at the amount of orbital flights that i hear nothing about on mainstream news. I'm glad the list is assembled. Of course my gut feeling is that there are also orbital flights launched from aircraft that aren't reported. JJ John, A belated Merry Christmas and a safe New Years to you and yours. My family lives in the U.S. I do miss our Thanksgiving get-togethers as our family reunion time. We have five adult children and eleven grandchildren. None have visited us in Thailand over the holidays the past two years. Yes, the mainstream media virtually ignores launches. I agree that aircraft may be launching orbital flights. One question: Where are the other listers that used to frequent this list? Please note I read only the digest. Terry Terry W. Sgt. Stacy Foster 51st Fighter Wing Public Affairs 3/13/2011 - OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- As Japan copes with the aftermath of the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that struck March 11, the United States has sent help in the form of personnel, equipment and a watchful eye in the sky -- a U-2 "Dragonlady" from the 5th Reconnaissance Squadron here. In conjunction with an RQ-4 Global Hawk remotely piloted aircraft from the 9th Operations Group Detachment 3, Andersen AFB Guam, the U-2 has been deployed to capture high-resolution, broad-area synoptic imagery, by utilizing an optical bar camera producing traditional film products which are developed and analyzed after landing Once the aircraft returns with the film, it will be shipped to Beale Air Force Base, Calif., where the 9th Intelligence Squadron will process and analyze the 10,500 feet of film. "The broad, synoptic collection of large land mass and littorals are of great benefit to decision makers," Lt. Col. Spencer Thomas, 5th RS commander said. "It will aid them in determining locations and extent of damage the earthquake and tsunami have left." Colonel Thomas also said the imagery can be likened to that of a medical injury. "It's like a personal injury; immediately after the event, one must determine where and how they have been injured," he said. "Our mission serves that function." >From start to finish, the mission is expected to take four to five days. Colonel Thomas said once they were notified, it took about 12 hours of planning and preparation to get the plane off the ground. Staff Sgt. William Ehinger, a U-2 dedicated crew chief with the 5th RS, led his team quickly to ensure the aircraft was ready to launch. "I am proud to be part of the humanitarian mission to help our Allies," he said. "In fact, all Airmen in the 5th RS are proud to be helping out to provide the data Japan needs to rebuild their country." Because the aircraft flies at such a high altitude - more than 70,000 feet - the U-2 pilot must wear a full pressure suit similar to those worn by astronauts. This process of preparing the pilot takes a couple hours to complete. The upload of the camera, which is much larger than a typical camera, weighs in at around 300 pounds, with the film weighing more than 120 pounds. Six hours later, the aircraft has been prepared. "These kinds of missions require much, much more than a pilot, an aircraft and a sensor," Colonel Thomas said. "The extended teamwork associated with this sort of effort reaches across multiple squadrons." During this humanitarian assistance and disaster relief mission, Colonel Thomas said everyone involved was keenly focused on the task at hand, as they are in any mission. "It's an extended network of Airmen, Americans, reaching out to assist our friends and allies in Japan," he said. "They're our friends and we're going to do whatever we can to help them." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Mar 2011 13:49:14 -0500 From: Jay Miller Subject: Re: skunk-works Dragonlady goes to work again. To: AVOID-L@lists.hawaii.edu Lovelockb^Ys idea was anticipated by the Westinghouse Corp., which in 1939 during the Worldb^Ys Fair in New York planted a time capsule ... Here is Einsteinb^Ys message to the people of 6939 A.D.: Our time is rich in inventive minds, the inventions of which could facilitate our lives considerably. We are crossing the seas by power and utilise power also in order to relieve humanity from all tiring muscular work. We have learned to fly and we are able to send messages and news without any difficulty over the entire world through electric waves. However, the production and distribution of commodities is entirely unorganised so that everybody must live in fear of being eliminated from the economic cycle, in this way suffering for the want of everything. Further more, people living in different countries kill each other at irregular time intervals, so that also for this reason any one who thinks about the future must live in fear and terror. This is due to the fact that the intelligence and character of the masses are incomparably lower than the intelligence and character of the few who produce something valuable for the community. I trust that posterity will read these statements with a feeling of proud and justified superiority. Terry W. In summary, it's a golden opportunity missed. Annie is not an airplane person and she is not in the least aviation savvy. She has no depth, no understanding, and no background that would give her the tools necessary to write about this most complex of subjects. She refers to "jet fighter rockets" and "destroyer battleships" and other such crap with far too much regularity. She gives virtually no credit to Kelly Johnson for anything that went on at Area 51 during the 1950s and 1960s - and conversely claims that Dick Bissell did everything. Tony LeVier's name is mentioned only once (that I recall), and for those of you who didn't know, the CIA did everything but build the A-12/F-12/SR-71 and D-21. One of Lockheed's U-2's crashed (during the mid-1950's flight test program) as a result of "overheating". I am, to put it mildly, sorely disappointed in this book. Any "non- fiction" history of Area 51 that claims the Roswell, NM flying saucer crap as the site's raison d'etre and that the flying saucer itself was the end product of Russia's post-war collaboration with the Horton Brothers isn't worthy of being a door stop, much less an historical resource in my reference library. Don't waste your money - not even the photos are fresh.
