Sun Jan 13, 2013 9:48 am (PST) . Posted by: "William R. Peterson" willipete3 I'd like to share a great experience with you guys: It was last Thursday at 1630 Hrs and I'm impressed. Jerry Davis just left, after 6 straight hours of mutual "debriefing". Jerry Davis, an "internet buddy" from USAF Radar Station Vets stopped by enroute to his former B-47/RB-47 co-pilot's home near Dover AFB. He also flew the F-86, RF-4C and spent several years in the U-2 (SEA - Laos airspace for NVN/Laos coverage and Cuba). He lives in Rocky Mount, NC and called me a few days ago. He asked to stop by... hell yes! I replied. We talked from 0930 til 1630 non-stop. What a blast! Lots of stories, mostly true! He gave me some details about Francis Gary Powers and the Non-shoot down by Soviet MiGs and SAMs. The SEA information he gave was this: In 1966 - 1967 he had two tours of U-2 duty at Bien Hoa in Vietnam. Because of the unique nature of their work they have different flying conditions, hours, schedules and tour lengths - so don't assume "tours" are like our tours. The pilots and a few flying staff officers are housed in a U-2 pilot trailer and they (and their Ops bldg) were in a separate physical location with special security, guards, etc apart from other personnel.. They flew out of Bien Hoa up over northern South Vietnam, Laos and had east-west orbits over the PDJ, for example. Later, in his second tour, the missions were flown in that area and also further north. They were able to fly meandering routes all over Laos. But they did avoid North Vietnam because of the SAM problem. We talked at some length about Radar Bomb Scoring units in SAC, and how that was used so successfully with the B-52 Arc Light operations in Vietnam. We also talked about Lima Site 85 in that regard. As a former SAC B-47 pilot he was very familiar with all of that. And I worked as SD at TACC-North Sector ("Motel") giving U-2 and S-71 very close Flight Follow and appropriate warnings. In those days everything they did was actual film photography. They would recover at Bien Hoa and the film would be sent to the recce tech in Saigon. >From there it was processed, copied and sent to Guam for analysis and further distribution. As a U-2 pilot they had little or no knowledge of the technical collection means or processing or intell value. We talked about Vietnam Buffalo Hunter drones + C-130 ops too. He didn't talk about U-2 SIGINT missions, although I referred to several. As time and technology progressed, and capabilities evolved, the collection and download method changed to digital with the ground site being Beale AFB, CA. (There are other capabilities but that's another story not for publication here.) Jerry said that the last information he had was from a national U-2 reunion in 2005 marking 50 years of U-2 Ops. After extensive use in Iraq, the U-2 has been used in support of combat ops/combat readiness in Afghanistan and also in Korea. He isn't personally aware of any other "current ops". But he did say at one time the Global Hawk was thought of as a U-2 replacement - but GH is going to the Guard and the U-2 is expected to remain in service until 2023. He has some great photos, and a very good newspaper story with photos covering the ops at Tucson and Jerry by name - 1965. They referred to it as the WU-2 and the weather recon "WU-2" designator was a cover story. I asked him to tell me all he could about famous U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers. Jerry said "to a man, U-2 pilots revere Francis Gary Powers as a great U-2 pilot". He was not shot down. To clarify, briefly, a highly technical subject: there are severe aircraft buffeting effects caused by stall speed - and conversely by Mach buffeting effects. The pilots make some settings and then fly a small "window" of altitude and airspeed. As the fuel is used the airplane rises to higher altitudes, approaching 72,000'. If you lose your position inside the window and approach either the higher or lower parameter of either Mach number or stall speed the buffeting can cause a stall and loss of control. In a few moments that produces either a nose dive toward earth or a deadly flat spin. There was no ejection seat. Powers, having had many, many SA-2's fired at him, had one go off near enough to cause a blast effect. That raised a wing which forced the plane to bank, and that effected the "window" because it exceeded the pre-set angle of bank limits. He went into a flat spin. As he reached 40,000 feet and falling like a rock he climbed out of the cockpit and jumped. There was an "armed detonator switch with a safeguard on it near the right window pane". and the pilot is supposed to break a fine copper wire that lets the switch complete a circuit which creates a detonation of an onboard bomb. That should destroy the aircraft within 20 seconds. Powers apparently decided he needed to get out fast, did not pull the wire and break the switch limit control, thus the detonation never occurred. Kruschev got a lot of U-2 parts as a result. Powers hit the ground and was captured before he could take his cyanide. But he was not "shot down" per se by a SAM nor a MiG. In fact the Russians lost some MiGs to their own SAMs. We covered a lot of ground - 50+ years in 6 hours. Jerry always says the same thing after we talk: he is totally amazed at how many people and units and types of facilities were involved in flight following and safeguarding his safety. To them it was pre-flight, take off, fly the WAC Chart from Point A to B and go home. Also, I got these U-2 declassified documents from a friend at the Thailand Laos Cambodia Brotherhood: http://tinyurl.com/9m6kmqc and http://tinyurl.com/yzqjbj5 This was the first time Jerry and I got to meet in person. It was a great day! Bill Peterson RSV www.TLC-brotherhood.com/Forum/ Terry W. Pilots of two F-100C aircraft spotted the object circling very near the balloon at about 150,000 feet. The inquiries to Edwards AFB (Muroc), California elicited a most interesting reply. The major activity at Edwards AFB was the AFFTC, which is the Air Force Flight Test Center. The teletype reply begins on page eight. The message is unclassified. However, mention of the U-2 is made. In 1958, the U-2 program was classified Top Secret, Sensitive Compartmented Information, and strictly need-to-know. In my opinion this was a security violation. Colvin" Subject: skunk-works The black triangle Fortean Times 295, December 2012, Letters, p. 73 The black triangle I currently live in the relatively sedate borough of Sutton-Coldfield in the suburbs of Birmingham. My home lies directly under the flight path for Birmingham International, and having lived in the area all my life, I hardly notice the continual roar of low-flying passenger jets -- although I firmly believe 'our' airspace may also be being used for a far more clandestine form of aviation traffic. Over the last five years, there have been over a dozen sightings of an aircraft apparently bearing little resemblance to conventional aviation design. These sightings appear to be linked -- in so far as the witnesses consistently report a black, triangular craft, with a light at each of the three corners, and which moves at great velocity without making any jet or piston-engine noise. In almost every case the sightings are accidental, as a result of the vehicle travelling at incredibly low altitude -- usually at night, leaving little opportunity to video or photograph the object in flight. One such incident was reported in our local newspaper (*Sutton Observer*, 2010). I contacted the paper, stating that their initial conclusion concerning little green (or grey) men might be a little too left-field. A few lines of my letter were printed in a follow-up article the following week, where I expanded on my initial theory, stating that far from witnessing extraterrestrial UFOs, what might actually be happening is the test flying of advanced experimental military recon- naissance aircraft. I briefly mention project 'Manta' and the SR91 etc, and how some of these supposed hypersonic aircraft might be using experimental propulsion technology other than pulse-detonation engines, allowing the aircraft to cancel out the detrimental effects of gravity and inertia, thus enabling such radical velocity and rate of turn. I didn't expect to be invited to expand further, as UFO folklore is hardly a staple of my local newspaper. However, that same week they received a similar reply, mirroring my own hypothesis. The writer stated that he was involved in the construction of these 'machines' in California, and that the ones he worked on were far larger versions designed for military use, as opposed to the one in question, which he believed to be an unmanned drone. Considering the man had emailed from California, he seemed remarkably well informed about the happenings in Sutton-Coldfield; although perhaps he was a former resident reading the paper via the Internet. Who knows? I hope I can gain a more in-depth insight into this mysterious air- craft, witnessed not just in my own backyard, but apparently across the globe. I look forward to further enlightenment.
