For fifty years there's been a lot of misinformation about concerning the shoot down of Powers; what he told you has a couple of those errors. First, his U-2 *did* have an ejection seat. Second, the *first* SAM fired damaged the horizontal stabilizers, causing the aircraft to pitch down and shed its wings. Some years ago, I heard Chris Pocock speak to the Roadrunners Internationale business meeting. The talk included the details of the shoot down. I found it particularly interesting because the audience had a number of pilots who'd been shot at flying U-2s and A-12s, including a Taiwanese pilot shot down in a U-2. For Powers's point of view, download the declassified debriefing from the CIA web site. For the complete story, relying on declassified Soviet documents, see one of Pocock's recent books. Posted by: "Robert Smith" While at HQ USAFE/LGME, 1976 - 1983, we had a CMSgt in our office that was essentially dedicated in support of the SR-71 Blackbird. The SR - 71 was stationed at only three locations in the world, Beale AFB, Ca., Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, and RAF Mildenhall, UK. One of "0ur" Chiefs primary duties was involved in the intricate cameras on the Blackbird, special camera shelters were designed at each SR-71 base to immediately develop and process the film after each mission. This was a critical and unique procedure with time of the absolute essence. In fact the lack of real time data link, was the principle cause of the demise of the SR-71, the delay no matter how fast, in developing the film was intolerable. The successor to the SR-71, the U-2 possessed data link capability. While the SR-71 burned a high quality JP-7 fuel, it required another special fuel to ignite the JP-7, this was called Triethylborane. I remember it was sent to RAF Mildenhall by a dedicated C-141 or C-5 Galaxy. The high altitude of 85,000 ft was an altitude record at the time, that with its top speed of over Mach 3, outperformed all Soviet Aircraft and missiles. Just a bit of SR-71 trivia. Thanks for the trivia. It's interesting to hear the U-2 described as the 'successor' to the Blackbird. I'm confused about the data link, as I've always believed that a data link was developed for the SR-71 and was indeed flight tested, but the USAF decided that it would be fitted only to the TR-1 and specifically not the SR-71. I've never read or heard of any insurmountable technical reasons why that was the case. The SR-71's capabilities were therefore intentionally downgraded. Was it simply that people in the Pentagon saw more personal power and glory to be gained from pushing for new recon sats rather than keep operating an aging and infrastructure intensive a/c (which they knew at some point would need to be replaced at who knows what cost)? Breathtaking that after all these decades since the first A-12 took off on a test flight, building an a/c to equal - much less improve on a Blackbird's performance would be an engineering - and funding nightmare. Just goes to show what you can achieve with the right engineers and minimal interference from management. As I told Major Davis when he visited me some time ago, the CIA pilots were a real PIA sometimes. I had to get a chuckle when old Deifenbacher (?) told Russia how happy he was to let them know no U-2 spy plane had ever operated in Canadian airspace. Either little did he know or he lied like a big dog. That was when Francis Gary powers went down in Russia. As far as the JP-7 juice "requirement," I know for certain that the SR-71's big brother the YF12-A could run on whatever fuel the KC-135s were off loading into the F100-Ds I was controlling one night when one flamed out way up yonder and requested assistance. I broke off the fighters and put them into an orbit pattern and hooked the YF up at around 33 Angels and he was able to take on a partial load. After breaking off the tanker I put him into an air start procedure the same as we used on the Star Fighters when the flamed out at their extreme fly up intercepts and got a successful start and monitored him off my scope and via radio all the way to Bergstrom where he made a precarious landing running on fumes. I have a letter from a MG Purees, ADC safety officer indicating a save of one of our newest experimental fighter aircraft some where with the exact date on it, but I seem to remember it was in 1963 or 64. I have been accused of making that story up, but there's an AF pilot somewhere if he is still functioning that would not be had everything not fallen into place just right and his aircraft was able to burn the JP that we were air refueling the F-100s with training them for the long flight across the pond on deployment to SEA . Colvin Western International University CAP 485 Integrated Capstone Professor -- Dr. Loyd Ray Ganey Jr. April 29, 2004 I now have a BA in Behavioral Science. Terry The Scientific Study of UFOs Careful reading of the full report reveals that 25-33 percent of the reports remained unsolved. Condon's personal views and his laissez-faire oversight contributed to the personality conflicts, hypocrisy, and incompetence of the work and to the overall negative tone of the report's executive summary (conclusion). Media reviewers read only the conclusion and scanned the numerous technical chapters thereby contri- buting to downplaying any need for further study. Case studies and a brief history of UFOs lead to the "scientific context" chapters, e.g. perception and reporting, optics, radar, sonic boom, atmospheric electricity and plasma, and balloons. Twenty-four appendices give the flavor of U.S. government handling of UFO reports from the late 1940s through the late 1960s. Critics such as Dr. J. Allen Hynek, USAF con- sultant on Project Blue Book, and Dr. James E. McDonald, a University of Arizona atmospheric physicist, stated the Condon Report was a setup to rid the USAF of its public relations nightmare and that some allegedly explained cases were actually unknowns, respectively. See web site: < http://www.ncas.org/condon/ > for the complete study on-line (Condon, 1969). "The 1968 Scientific Study of Unidentified Flying Objects is presented complete with graphics, equations and photographs. This was the final report of a US Air Force-funded university study per- formed by Edward U. Condon et al. It is sometimes called "Project Blue Book", named after the Air Force structure for handling UFO reports prior to 1966." [Published review of Terry W. Colvin in Fortean Times] The U.S. Air Force beat a hasty retreat out of the official UFO business following an independent evaluation of its work by the University of Colorado. Headed by physicist Edward Condon, the two-year Scientific Study of Unidentified Flying Objects drew three conclusions: 1) UFOs didn't represent a technology beyond the 1969 level of understanding; 2) they didn't threaten national security; and 3) continued study of the phenomenon probably wouldn't contribute anything to modern science (Condon, 1969). Statement by Dr. McDonald: "The Condon Report, released in January, 1968, after about two years of Air Force-supported study is, in my opinion, quite inadequate. The sheer bulk of the Report, and the inclusion of much that can only be viewed as "scientific padding", cannot conceal from anyone who studies it closely the salient point that it represents an examination of only a tiny fraction of the most puzzling UFO reports of the past two decades, and that its level of scientific argumentation is wholly unsatisfactory. Further- more, of the roughly 90 cases that it specifically confronts, over 30 are conceded to be unexplained. With so large a fraction of unexplained cases (out of a sample that is by no means limited only to the truly puzzling cases, but includes an objectionably large number of obviously trivial cases), it is far from clear how Dr. Condon felt justified in concluding that the study indicated "that further extensive study of UFOs probably cannot be justified in the expectation that science will be advanced thereby (Condon, 1969). UFOlogists complain that the insufficient information and identified categories were lumped together to improve their numbers. This is what happened but it seems for less than sinister reasons. Ruppelt just seemed more interested in weeding out the unidentified cases to study them than wasting effort over reports that could never be solved one way or the other. The lumping together with the identifieds became policy and, unfortu- nately, resulted in a somewhat skewed result when examining how many cases were actually unsolved. The United States Air Force saw the greatest number of UFO reports generated in 1952 than in any other year of the project. With such a vast number of reports, Ruppelt, with his small staff, had difficulty in resolving them. They received 1501 reports in 1952 according to USAF records. Of these, 303 were classified as unidentified. Considering the size of his staff, one would think that an 80% solution rate would be impressive but in reality not that many were solved. A significant number of the remaining 1198 were classified as insufficient information (roughly 20% of the total number). WWW Site #2: Brummett, W.E., Zuick, E.R. (1974, May). Retrieved December 5, 2003 from http://www.cufon.org/cufon/afrstdy1.htm This study evaluates factors related to the USAF investigation of Unidentified Flying Objects in an attempt to determine whether or not additional UFO investigation is warranted. The approach to analysis taken by this study was twofold: one writer evaluated evidence justifying the closure of Project Blue Book while the other writer evaluated evidence supporting its reopening. Based on the evidence uncovered, the study concludes that there is a definite need for a new UFO investigation. The study recommends that such an investigation should be a scientific undertaking free from bias, political pressure, and USAF or DoD (Dept. of Defense) jurisdiction. The official Air Force explanation regarding the Hills' UFO sighting turned out to be almost as erratic as the radar and visual sightings themselves. The official explanations in this particular case included "weather inversion", "the Planet Jupiter", "optical condition", and finally "insufficient data". This study recommends a new UFO study should be initiated under the guidance of a congressional sub-committee. No Defense Department agencies should be directly involved in the study. A national UFO organization should be created whose membership is comprised of scientists and astronomers with respected professional reputations and proven ability. Fascinating this apparent anti-USAF study was written by a Major and a Captain in the U.S. Air Force at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama. Second, its methodology; namely, did the Report, in the opinion of the Panel, reveal an acceptable scientific methodology and approach to the subject? Third, its findings; namely, were the conclusions and interpreta- tions warranted by the evidence and analyses as pre- sented in the Report and were they reasonable? Ten chapters are devoted to perceptual problems, processes of perception and reporting, psychological aspects of UFO reports, optics, radar, sonic boom, atmospheric electricity and plasma interpretations, balloons, instrumentation for UFO searches, and statistical analyses. Having passed through several platforms, *U* is now a large stand-alone DOS application, written in C-language for PC, with data and other supporting files. As of December, 2003 *U* holds over 18,120 carefully filtered UFO events distilled from hundreds of books, major journals, catalogs, downloads and other sources. I think it was around 1995 when the term Area 51 started to be used. Lawyer Jonathan Turley was the leading attorney on lawsuits involving the death and health claims from workers at Groom Lake. A few years back, a retired SMSGT wrote an article in an Air Force Magazine about his work at Tonopah, Nevada sites. He said he traveled to various countries and purchased Russian Radar Systems for reverse engineering. I would suggest that many getting on the 737's were military personnel in civilian clothing. The flights most likely cost less then full support/security needed to house them at Area 51. Now, what is not at Area 51; no little green men, no E.T. bicycles or other vehicles for him to ride. No hidden cave's that were used for bomb testing now used to hide stuff. The underground testing took place south of Area 51. I suggest one read Area 51 An Uncensored History Of America's Top Secret Military Base. At the same time you should read T.D. Barnes' review at amazon.com. His words, "However, take away the final chapter, Area 51 An Uncensored History Of America's Top Secret Military Base is certainly one that should be read to learn a bit about the secret heroes of the Cold War." For Cheif Smith, from your posting's on radar systems, you may have provided your knowledge and skill to Area 51. Glenn Watts Columbia, SC Terry W.
